Damn this takes forever... [ Site News ]

  1. Edit script via ssh session to old server.
  2. Copy script from old server to my machine via Samba and windows explorer.
  3. ftp script to new server.
  4. log on to new servers admin pages to set permissions (toying with ftp client eliminates this step...wish I would have seen the option earlier).
  5. log on to MY admin pages to test script.
  6. if failure, pour over code again and repeat steps.

There we go... [ Site News ]

So yes, another layout. This is a generic "hey look, I am a blogger" look, which normally means I hate it, but I think it will work for now. It was kinda fun coding, and believe it or not, presented a couple of challanges to get things looking similar between IE and Opera. There is a little pixel shifting between the two, but overall it is all good. I am curious to see what it looks like on other OSs and resolutions. I run at 11582x864 on XP, but I know I am not the average user. Also, Opera and FireFox users will get some hover stuff your IE counterparts won't...at least not until hopefully IE7.

I need to post more [ Site News ]
Posted on: 2005-06-13 14:43:18, by talam

Posting 2-3 times a week is realy kinda pathetic. Oh well, I am playing around with a new idea, or maybe an old idea that is getting actual attention. I have spent the last hour or so sketching a couple of character ideas and drawing up a story board. Knowing how unfocused I am, it will probably never see the light of day. But since it is funny, and I think most of you will at least find it amusing, I might actually get around to it. I am going to try and work on it a couple of hours a day...we will see if it pans out. I have pickup up work on rf2 again, nothing spectacular, but anything is something.

I am kinda scared... [ Site News ]
Posted on: 2005-05-25 01:57:29, by talam

It seems odd to me, but the new site seems to be moving on fairly rapidly. I am looking to duplicate everything in the current incarnation of rantfest with a few minor features by the end of next week. Planning the new database seemed to take no time at all. I was expecting a couple of days of work to nail it down to something feasible, but it fell into place within hours. There are a couple of minor adjustments to make, but at this stage in the development it will take no time at all to do...and it is not really that pressing. So I am left with only one real hitch to the database and I will read up on the best solution for that tomorrow...basically I know two ways to handle it and am not sure which is better.

???.com staring rantfest 2.0 [ Site News ]

I am highly anticipating the move to the new server and to the new version of rantfest (that I have hardly started working on, hehe). My goal is to have a working set of scripts by July 1st...and I have a lot of work to do. I have a general idea of how I want things to work, but no idea how I want the database to be setup...which is bad since I am gonna have to import our current stuff in.

200th post! [ Site News ]
Posted on: 2005-05-02 01:43:46, by talam

Yeah, ok, I had mentioned in the last post that it was the 200th post...well, I realized I had a blank hidden post in there, so I deleted it, edited my post, and revamped my site. I had to play with the code a little to make it display like this, but it was something I had wanted to add in for possible 'Archive' page looks. I will probably be playing with colors for the next couple of days...I don't like it to look TOO similar between changes.

I got bored..I mean, new feature... [ Site News ]

I wrote a very crude search function for the site. As it stands, it only searches through the authors rants. User comments will probably added in relatively soon, but I don't plan on adding in searching pages. Anyways, the searches, we will use my latest obbsession to illustrate this, Star Wars Galaxies. Entering Star Wars Galaxies will pull every post that has that phrase. Star, Wars, Galaxies pulls every post that contains any of those words. Star Wars, Dune will grab any posts with "Star Wars" and any posts with Dune. I know it is not the best system, but it works for me for now.

Tooling around. [ Site News ]
Posted on: 2005-03-22 05:53:03, by talam

I got it into my head that I wanted to work on something new. So I fired up putty, got my test script ready, and moved over to my working area. Next I made a couple os simple additions to ranttest to track variables and make sure that I am going where I need to. Then I decided that my test user's page was ugly so spent the next 3 hours working on a new setup for him... almost forgetting what I was doing. After getting back to the work at hand, I got a little headway in. Ok, technically I am farther than I expected to be even if I had not had the aside with style, but it still needs some work. It also made me realize that I hate what I am doing with polls, so I am going to get rid of them until I change everything. I really don't know what I was thinking when I thought up the design. I mean, I am fairly dumb, and I admit that. But wow, this is bad in retrospect. I think before I roll out the next complete makeover of rantfest I am going to invest a few hundred hours reading about database design and implementation...which I should have done before building this massive page. Oh well.

Introducing rantfest polls. [ Site News ]
Posted on: 2005-03-17 02:56:41, by talam

In an ongoing effort to occupy myself in the late night hours when I am too tired to have any coordination gaming (and I am so close to beating Doom 3) I have added polls to the site. Well, ok, I have added semifunctional polls to rantfest. As it stands, there are exactly five options, no more no less (ie the semifunctional part). When I get back to working on the polls this will change, but as usuall with these posts, I am tired. So, here is another general statement: I will probably have them finished within a day or so. As for now though, they are working as intended. The table that displays the results is not what I would call beautiful by any means but it works.
