I am now an employee of Sony DADC. I start work on Monday and all next week I will be working days to get trained in the DVD packaging world. After that, I will go to nights and stay on nights for the rest of my time there... which to be honest, is what I wanted to work. Had I been working days, there is no way I would be able to go to school in the fall. As it is, I think I am only going to be able to swing one or two classes. The job only lasts until the end of December, so I will be back to hitting the keyboard and mouse hardcore in the spring and summer.
We went through orientation yesterday. I have mixed opinions about it. I expected to come out of there with a greater comfort feeling, but as it is, I feel like I only know a pinch more than I went in with. Hell, I think I got more out of my 20 minute physical today than I did out of the 8 hours I was there yesterday. But, I did get my schedule, and we are getting a more area specific orientation sorta thing this Monday. This set of positions is also new to them. Previously they had been using temp agencies to fill, and this year they opted to do it themselves and they also wanted to turn it into a recurring position. So, if I am still with them when this run finishes in December, I will be first up for hire next year. It will be dicey the first couple of years, but after that I am sure it will save them heartache and money since they won't have to retrain a lot of people.
I was very impressed with the level of security they have. We have badges that we need to scan to get to and from most areas and they are keyed to us so they can track where our badges are. They also scan everyone leaving. We also got a nice security though paranoia speech with was well done. It basically hinged around the fact that the majority of their employees tended to be so honest that people who were trying to steal product were turned in before they ever made it to the doors to be found out... only it was fairly convincing. The level of security is understandable given the amount of product they deal with and the industry. I guess more than anything, I kept feeling that it was more secure than some Military bases I have been on. Though, I guess in the civilian world there isn't the fear of soldiers jumping out of the bushes with machine guns if you do something bad, so they have to show the fact that they are everwhere.
