So a couple of weeks ago I felt compelled to install StarWars Galaxies again. I always loved the game, but changes made after I left the last time kept me from coming back. Basically, they totally changed the profession system to a less free form version and the ground combat is now a twitch system. Anyway, I knew I was not going to pay for it, but since I never know when they are dishing out free months I thought I might get lucky and get a free month. As luck would have it, I did land in the middle of a free month..go me.
I am playing with this huge arching quest called the Legacy quest. The idea of the quest is to finally give some direction for players who start up for the first time and then stand around asking everyone what they are supposed to do. SWG used to just be a world you lived in that happened to be set between StarWars 4 and 5 so the point was live like you would if you lived in the world. Yes, very vague and open, that was what made SWG cool. Anyways, since SWG is now an action game with set classes they needed to add direction, ie the Legacy quest. This series of quests also introduce you to a number of worlds and take you to familiar locations throughout the movies.
The first set of missions was set on Tatooine. It had lots of interaction with the world from episode 4, a lot of switched dialogue from the movies, and some campy humor. It was great. The second set is on Naboo, the planet we have always called home. And I was excited to do this set, I figured it would run past the few familiar places here and maybe swing down by the Emperor's retreat. Well, no, not really. There are some set in Theed and I am now doing some missions from the Gungan Sacred Place, but the missions have really lost their flavor and seem really devoid of plot (wait, maybe it is like the movies these settings come from). The missions are predictable: go here, talk to this person, go kill 9, 11, or 15 members of a local game or animal or maybe some combination thereof and kill one or two bosses. It really feels like they just want me to thin out the numbers of the local gangs. Right now, I am supposed to kill two groups of 9 and one of 11...then it will probably update for me to kill their boss. If I was not so close to finishing it, I would probably just chuck them and do something more interesting, like grinding an artisan from scratch, or sitting motionless staring at a wall. I would also just kinda like to finish it off because it happens to be located on my home planet. There are also at least a set for Corellia, but I think I will just read up on them first and see if they are worth the time or more of this lameness.
