How many? - Games - DnD - RCM
Posted on: 2006-07-09 18:24:30

I had a moderately productive night last night. I got some headway into making a page out of Erin's RCM idea. If I actually work on it tonight instead of devoting all my time to SWG I should have a workable script in a couple of hours. I may later spin it in a different direction, but for now I am planning on keeping it simple.

The majority of the evening, however, was devoted to DnD. I volunteered to make a short mod for the group about a month ago to fit between the mod they just finished and the next one...or course, when I said I would make it I had plenty of time to work on it, now I have like three days. The generic goal of the campaign is to provide a chance to get some things done for Jim's character, get some extra experience to hit level 10, and obtain some coin.

Most of the ideas are what floated from the top of the pile of crap that was my campaign. But in setting up encounters I am left with the question of how many creatures is too much for the party. The party bounces between 3 and 6 players (or 3-5 for the next month since I will be at work) with the core 3 being very experienced players. The party will be 9th level with the punching power of around 10th. So how many level 1 creatures does it take to present a challenge to a 10th level party, how many 2nd level, 3rd level... How many hit dice of mobs can I toss at the party without killing them but still presenting a serious challenge? 95? Let's hope 95 is the right number.

Oh well, I guess I should stop writing and get back to work on the mod. I have two more levels to layout the encounters for.

Yay

Sounds like fun. Nice of you to think of Jim's character, unless of course you were targeting it for death.

One of these days when I have a better grasp on creating a mod, I'm going to make one.

Actually

I am in a tought place. This is going to be the 'Jim needs to kill a dragon to become his prestige class' thing. Everything else is just fluff to keep you guys busy. The problem comes in the fact that a 10th level character has no business fighting a dragon on their own, so he will probably get his ass handed to him.

...and that is not me picking on Jim's char, the only real tactic any of us would have against a dragon is running the hell away.

True enough

If he dies, he'll probably blame me again.

you mean there's a reason why not everybody becomes a Vassal of Baphomet? Because many die trying?

Kobold Hell

Ah, I tend to remember the days of Dragon Mountain where all I needed to produce a few hundred 1 HD kobolds... Now there were a variety of them (i.e. flying, silver toothpick throwers, suicide bombers with greek fire). Ah, those were the days, and some lived to tell about the dream that they were present. *cough* Nightmare...

You know me, given the time I can come up with a smell piece of shit no matter what the circumstances are... omg...

Longing...

Ah, how I long for a DnD group... Being in MD though kinda puts a damper on things...

Yes

Because there are no DnD groups in MD.

Of course, I don't think I would try and find a group in a new place. Hell, if this group broke up I would not try and find a new group here.

But

But we have more than DnD. At least I'd like to think so.

Yeah.

We do have more than DnD, and that is why I still play most of the time. I enjoy the game and I enjoy the people, but I have no interest in meeting new people or learning new sets of rules.

Module

How did the module go? I want to see a post about it - if it has happened that is.

Well...

Technically, it was supposed to be last night, but I never actually got around to finishing it. We are not playing next week, so maybe it will be run the week after or the one after that, either way, I won't be there for it.
