For the past 16 hours I have been running SpinRite (awesome HD utility even if the webpage is straight out of the 90's) on an old hard drive I found on the wife's desk. It had been having delayed write errors and now it is perfect. Anyways, we came home from eating at Mogger's with the gang, I reset after the SpinRite session only to find my mouse was dead. My MX1000, which is only 2 years old, refused to respond...I was so sad. I went through and checked all my connections and double checked the battery power and all seemed right. Software side, everything seemed fine as well, with the exception of the mouse simply not showing up. It was not until I removed all my USB devices and tried it on its own that it decided to work, and now it is working perfectly. The only thing I can think of is maybe I nudged a cord just enough when installing the hard drive that the connection was broken.
I am just glad it is working. I like to spend a little more on my peripherals since they are what I use directly interact with the computer, but the cost is offset by comfort and longevity. I kinda like to think $15-20/year for a mouse that is exactly what I want, and $10-15 for a keyboard of the same quality. Since I have owned my mouse for less than two years, it was around $35/year...which would not have made me happy. I probably would have fallen back to the mouse that came with my keyboard...its ok.
