My cursor takes effort. - Computer
Posted on: 2007-06-17 06:35:51

I have been toying around with performance some more. One of the things I noticed was that SideBar was taking around 70 meg of memory. Not sure about the rest of the world, but I think that is way too much. Now the Yahoo widget engine has a base memory usage and then more for every widget you are running, thinking SideBar would work the same I start killing widgets (which technically, Vista calls 'gadgets'...same damn thing). Killing widgets did absolutely nothing...but in the process, I did notice something. Everytime my cursor moved around my CPU usage was pegged. I tried both using Aero and Vista basic and both pegged my CPU. After a few minutes I realized that it was the Sidebar itself. Everytime my cursor hovered over the Sidebar, the CPU usage pegged out. Soooo, I don't think I will be using it anymore.

That is the kind of thing...

...that just shouldn't happen upon release of a new product. I know you said you tried removing the widgets, but I was wondering, did the SideBar have a widget running on it that has to update everytime the cursor hovers the SideBar? Perhaps that is the drain on the CPU.

Not really.

I had all the widgets closed when I noticed the CPU usage pegging. The sidebar is transparent, and when I hover over it the opacity of its background changes. I am fairly certain it is the changing in opacity that is doing it.

Yup

That sounds like it. It also sounds like MS should have known of this issue and managed the resources better, allowed for the transparency to be turned off, or eliminated the SideBar.

Wow....

Vista sounds like so much fun. Just imagine Tommy or someone else bad in computers trying to use it. I hope it works better someday.
