X-Men Origins: Wolverine - Movies - Comics - 3/5
Posted on: 2009-09-18 12:04:29

I saw the Wolvie movie last night. I really enjoyed, and surprised by how much I enjoyed, the first 40-60 minutes. Then there was what the wife and I call a Queen moment, and things went downhill from there. I still enjoyed the movie, but as a Marvel fan, I was disappointed by how much they conjured for the movie. And even that, if they hadn't used Deadpool as the Frankenstein's monster of the story and used random never before heard of mutant for the role (yes, I know, more conjuring), I think it would be better. Comics Deadpool's power set: wicked regeneration. Power set from this movie's Deadpool: wicked regeneration, controllable eyeblasts, teleporation, and katana blades from the hands. Had they used someone new, who didn't have a future in the comics (and movies), they could have killed the character off and been done with it.

I just hate it when they make origin stories that change things so much the current stories don't make sense anymore. I mean, how would you feel if The Force was really had something to do with microorganisms... Oh wait.

I did enjoy most of the characters. Agent Zero was pretty much the serious mercenary with little personality he was in the comics I have read. I thought the Blob was fun. I am totally unfamiliar with Cowboy-Hat-Man, er Kestrel, but I kept expecting him to break out into Yes W Can. Most of the rest of the characters were kept to small enough roles that their departures from how their characters are in the comics was kept a 'who cares about it' point.

SPOILER CRAP

Gambit's inclusion was obvious fan bait. While his character wasn't played badly, paying attention to just why he was there make his appearance fairly silly. They had to track him down because he was the only one in the world to be badass enough to escape from the ultra secret, ultra hidden, impossible to find island base of Stryker. So after breaking up a fight between Wolvie and Sabertooth...the guy who had originally captured Gambit and taken him to the island...the guy Gambit wanted dead...the guy Wolvie was about to kill...sigh. Anyways, Wolvie promises Gambit that if he helps him get to and break into the Island, he will kill Stryker, Sabertooth, everyone involved, the grass, structures with windows, and every insect he can detect with his super senses. Well, the ultra secret, hidden base is really Three Mile Island, and Gambit helps him break in by, flying him vaguely near the island and letting him jump out of the plane.

Way to keep up your side of the bargain fan bait. At least Wolvie is a killing machine. So it shouldn't be hard for him to keep his part of the bargain. Oh wait, that is right, he doesn't kill anyone. He fights Sabertooth, lets him live, then they team up (sort of) and take down Frankenpool.

END SPOILER CRAP

All in all, it wasn't bad. I enjoyed the begining of the movie enough to forgive the rest, and the end wasn't really all that bad. Of the four most recent X movies, X1 is on top, X2 is close by, Wolvie is a distant third, and X3 gets an honorable mention just for the sheer volume of mutants they included.

Arm Katanas. [Spoilers ahead]

Seriously, the arm katana blades pissed me off. How would he even bend his arms when they are retracted? So utterly lame.

I had the same feelings about Gambit... the whole stopping Wolverine from killing Sabretooth thing was just stupid.

Also, what did you think of CGI Professor X at the end? He looked like he was a mannequin covered in pancake makeup to me. Hilarious.

Argh, also... Adamantium Bullets?! CMON! ARRRGH. I forgot how many problems I had with that movie. Regardless I ended up enjoying it too, but I think it could have been way better.

On another note, if you get a chance I recommend you trying out the game on your 360, it is quite awesome. Go rent it from Family Video or something - it is well worth it.

I kinda liked Professor Pancake. He had kind of an innocent glow about him. And the bullets were a terrible way to force in the memory loss.

Deadpool

I'm confused. Was the combo guy Deadpool? Didn't they do him in with the decapitation and all? How does that make for his own movie?

Somebody didn't watch through the credits... At the very end, amidst all the rubble, you see the katana blade withdrawn into the a hand coming out of the dirt and rock. The arm stretches out towards Deadpool's head. Shortly after it touches the head, the eyes and mouth open.

In the comics, Deadpool has been decapitated twice. Both times, someone else reattached the head within hours. Essentially, he was dead until it was reattached. But the two parts were not alive, like in the movie.

Pondering points

Ponder this - Wolverine can't sense when someone is dead or alive even though he has heightened super human senses? I guess following the exact comic must require trailers of money, mountains of additional effort and a desire to avoid an exercise in futility... *sigh*

Pancake man was lawlable fo-sure! =)

This is ironic because he's the one that would stay through credits at the movie theater.

Actually the way I watch movies kicked in. The movie was still in the player about a quarter of the way through the credits. Something had come up so I left it there. When Ian mentioned the credits, all I had to do was turn it back on and finish them. I might have anyway.
