I was messing around with the start menu in my recent Windows 7 install, moving programs around, and I got to thinking about the importance of programs. There are a lot of wonderful things about Windows 7, but adequate Quick Launch space isn't one of them. To make up for that, you can easily pin programs to the main panel of the start menu as in the picture. Still, even with both areas, I find myself trimmed down from the 20+ items I had in my Quick Launch back in XP, so I got to thinking about priority. Add to that, that I have reloaded the wife's laptop twice, my desktop once, my laptop once (with another in a couple of days), and recent work on my software page, programs have been on the top of my mind.
What do I need on a daily basis versus what do I feel I need all the time. Ignoring things like antivirus, codec packs, and drivers, if you had to, could you narrow the list of applications you have down to five. I found mine were easy: Opera, foobar2k, Photoshop, putty, and OpenOffice. If I could only have five programs, those would be them. I have any number of other programs I use, some daily, some only on occasion, but those five sum up my computer existence.
So what five define you?
